Savannah Before Humans: Concept

The above are preliminary concept renderings for a projections mapping project I pitched this past Winter 2016 quarter. The concept for my Projections Experiment class developed under the idea of the 'Artist as an Activist'. As a Design for Sustainability minor, the environment and climate change are topics of urgency to me, and I wanted to bring together projections as mass media and this important subject to the people of Savannah, GA.

The project would have been a mapping of the Lucas Theatre for the Arts façade, and would have followed an accelerated visual narrative of what would happen if humans disappeared from the Earth. My exploration would not attempt to explain why the human race has disappeared or if it has become extinct, but rather how nature would reclaim what we have built.

The concept is location-based, as Savannah was the first planned city in the United States; the Lucas Theatre, built in 1927, is a keystone of civilization and society in the Southern United States. However, by adapting the media content to fit the local environment, biome, and native species of flora and fauna, this project could be done anywhere in the world.
